Pre-nups have had a bad rep in the world of marriage, most likely in part due to their success in the divorce arena. People are wont to think that it is only the richer spouse who benefits, partly due to high profile celebrity prenuptial agreements. But here are some surprising benefits for the average Joe. The main argument of soon to be spouses are: if we love each other and think that this will last, why do we need insurance? But what they often may fail to see is that the insurance works both ways and, if the couple in question has kids, it will mean a much less messy divorce all around. In fact, partners who already have a divorce under their belt are more inclined to have a prenuptial agreement, mostly to protect any children by their prior marriage. People are often also wary of being cheated out of what they believe that they deserve. But this is not the case in practice. In actual fact, an unfair prenuptial agreement may be rejected by a court during divorce proceedings. The courts are on both your sides, even if your spouse’s lawyer is not. You may not get a fifty-fifty deal but it’s clear where you stand from the start. Also, full financial disclosure from both parties is a must, so both of you will be aware of the assets and any baggage from the offset. This means that at least you won’t be hoodwinked by your partner with debt you did not know about but are both liable to pay off. One fact that may be less well known is that prenups also serve to dictate the distribution of assets upon death. This means that even though a couple may not think that they will divorce, they must prepare for the alternative. For many people it also makes sense to also account for the possibility of divorce and this is not a reflection of their love for their partner. They might see it as conflict resolution or simply being fair. If a potential spouse has inherited heirlooms or runs a business, however small, they may simply not relish the possibility of losing these assets in a divorce battle. In the end, why don’t we prepare for the risk of a divorce in the same way that we may prepare for the possibility that we might accrue a debilitating disease or be involved in an accident: nobody wants to get divorced but we may as well account for it.

The divorce of Cameron Crowe and Nancy Wilson raises questions about how any marriage is expected to last if this one could not. The director Crowe and his wife Wilson, one of the vocalists and musicians with Heart, were a couple for 24 years before she asked for a divorce in 2010, citing irreconcilable difference. They seemed to have an ideal life together, collaborating on numerous projects and always presenting an amiable impression. News of their divorce broke in September 2010 after the couple had spent two years separated from each other. The divorce was made final in December of that year. Crowe started his road to fame as a young journalist for Rolling Stone, covering many of the most popular hard rock bands of the 1970s. At the age of 22, he decided to write a book, enrolling in high school to get the background needed for Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story. His career expanded to screenwriting and then directing after his book became a movie. He and Nancy Wilson married in 1986. She was in the peak years of her career as a singer and musician. She also played a small role in the movie version of Fast Times at Ridgemont High and appeared in at least one of the films Crowe directed. Crowe’s career as a director was in the early stages when they married, but he later went on to eclipse his wife’s fame. They co-wrote music for some of his films, and her pieces are featured in many of his movies. The couple has twin sons.
